Smithsonite Green-Smithsonian founder James Smithson recognized this mineral as a zinc carbonate in 1802. He announced his discovery to the Royal Society in London the same year, and published his findings in their Journal in 1803. The presence of cobalt in the crystals make it appeal pink, while copper makes it green or blue. Smithsonite forms in parts of oxidized copper-zinc deposits, and is associated with malachite and azurite. This piece was bought at a museum sale. This is a museum specimen which weighs about 14 oz.
