Spiderweb Gibbsite and Imitation turquoise composite
Spiderweb Gibbsite and Imitation turquoise composite made from barium oxide and manganese pigments. Is this real Turquoise? No. If it was, it would be worth a few $1000.00 ++ a Lb. Does one care? It is nice stuff. The small webbing is mostly the imitation. The larger is mostly gibbsite with the black and calcopyrite. More info on the Imitation: Rather it is composed of barium oxide, which is used as a porcelain glaze and pigment, heating barium oxide in the presence of manganese creates a turquoise colored imitation pigment. The matrix is composed of iron oxide to give it the black webbing pattern and glistened with additional chalcopyrite to add additional color. Surprisingly, it also contains a considerable amount of lead, which is safe if handled properly and cut or polished with adequate ventilation.
